Tian'an Men Square and Forbidden City

Tian'an Men Square is where the People's Republic of China was founded. Mao founded the People's Republic of China in 1949 from the Ming Dynasty.

This tall hall is where the embalmed body of Mao rests. It is encased in a crystal casket and draped in a red flag. It is raised twice a day for public viewing. We did not view it.

Us at Tian'an Men Square.

The group

There is a picture of Mao, but this is a bad angle.

Forbidden City entrance. This palace was the domain of 24 Emperors. It was completed in 1420 and the last Emperor was forced to abdicate at the beginning of the 20th century.

Five marble bridges allow access over the moat. It blows my mind how grand this palace is. Well actually not just the palace but everything the Emperors used.

Gate of Supreme Harmony.

The Guardian Lions again. They symbolize power and dignity.

The outer court. It was huge!

Cool picture of the doorway. You can count 9 rows and 9 knobs per row again here.

Check out this detail!

This building had not been restored yet.

Awesome ramp!

I loved this. I just think it looks so cool!

This ramp is sculpted with dragons and clouds and was made from a single piece of marble weighing more than 200 tons. The servants would carry the Emperor up this ramp.

Empress' bed

Imperial Garden. One of several gardens on the grounds.

The trees were pretty spectacular!

See what I mean about the trees?!

Again!

Can you spot the gorilla head?

Walking out.

Matt liked this sign that was on the street outside of the Forbidden City.

And I really liked this homemade broom this lady was using to clean the streets!
